Who might
use the Batchen Ranger?
- Shire
and city councils
- Metropolitan
and Country Fire Services
- Service
providers such as weed control officers
and contractors
- Nurseries
- Horticulturalists
- Organic
and other specialist farmers
- Land
owners
- Commonwealth
Agencies
- Golf
Clubs
- Resorts
and retreats TOP
How does
thermal weed control actually work?
The
aim of thermal weed control is to apply
sufficient heat to severely damage the plant
cells so the plant will die. By quickly
raising the temperature of the plant tissue
by 70oC the cell membrane bursts
and interrupting normal plant growth.
Applying heat to plant seeds may reduce
viability or where sufficient heat is used
consume them. TOP
Should you
completely burn the weed?
No,
there is no need to completely burn the weed.
Burning the weed is actually counter
productive to the thermal weed control
process.
Burning
may be a desirable control method in some
situations, but normally when thermal weed
control is discussed burning is excluded. TOP
Can I use
thermal weed control on my crops?
Thermal
weed control is appropriate for agricultural,
horticultural, and nursery situations as well
as for controlling weeds in native bush and
around buildings, fence lines and roadways. TOP
Can the
Ranger be used during fire bans?
Permission
can be sought to use the Ranger under
controlled circumstances such as in
agricultural areas, urban parks, schoolyards,
golf course, and sporting fields. TOP
Do you
have to be strong to use the Batchen Ranger?
The
Atarus Ranger was specifically designed for
mobility and ease of use. The Ranger is about
twelve kilograms with a full cylinder of LP
Gas. TOP
What is
the difference between liquid withdrawal LP Gas
appliances and vapour withdrawal LP Gas
appliances, such as my gas barbecue?
Most
LP Gas appliances burn LP Gas vapour, this
includes the Batchen Ranger. When we talk
about liquid and vapour withdrawal systems we
are talking about what form the gas is taken
from the cyclinder. Liquid withdrawal
cylinders are different from the normal
barbeque cylinder in that there is a tube in
the cylinder which allows the liquid to be
withdrawn.
Small
appliances such as barbecues receive a
sufficient supply of gas vapour from a small
cylinder at normal outdoor temperatures.
Small cylinders in the same environment are
incapable of producing sufficient gas vapour
to supply larger capacity appliances, like
the Ranger. The reason the Ranger can be
supplied from a small cylinder is that liquid
is taken from the cylinder and it is
converted to vapour by the Ranger prior to
burning.
It
is extremely dangerous to connect a liquid
withdrawal cylinder to an appliance designed
for vapour only. It is for this reason that
the Batchen cylinder is provided with a valve
that is not compatible with these appliances.

What
benefits might the Ranger offer me?
- similar
level of effectiveness to most herbicides
without the possible side effects of
chemicals
- similar
level of manual labour to do the same job
- environmentally
cleaner approach to vegetation control
- no
chance of plants developing resistance to
the process
- effective
on many woody and succulent weeds
- can
prevent the setting of seeds on many
weeds
- when
used on seeding plants there is the
additional benefit of consuming or
affecting the seed viability of the weed TOP
Why can't
I buy a Batchen Ranger?
The Ranger incorporates
a couple of very innovative technologies not previously used on
portable LP Gas consuming devices. Although the technologies and
their configuration in the Ranger is completely safe, we believe
that for complete operator safety the equipment must be examined
on a regular basis and maintained as required. As part of the
lease arrangement there are periodic inspections and repairs made
as required. TOP
How long will a cylinder
of LP Gas last?
A
full cylinder of LP Gas will sustain both
burners on the Ranger for about 30 minutes.
The main burner alone will operate for
approximately 60 minutes. TOP
How much
will a cylinder of LP Gas cost?
The
Atarus LP Gas cylinder holds approximately 5
litres of gas which could cost anywhere
between $0.45 and $1.50 per litre depending
on where the gas is purchased. TOP
